A dialogue with a space

Miss Micks:

Who am I?

The Organisers:

You are a 40 square metre space in a 19th Century industrial building in Kreuzberg. You are also Sophie Rook and Andrew Kerton.

Miss Micks:

Who are they?

The Organisers:

Two English-in-Berlin. A painter and a video/performance artist respectively.
They live with you (it is they who answer your questions).

Miss Micks:

So I am them?

The Organisers:

No. You are no one. They just come with you. They organise what takes place
within you.

Miss Micks:

I am no one. So what then am I?

The Organisers:

A new events space. You are a regular opportunity for the creation and live presentation of work by performers and artists.

Miss Micks:

So I'm like a venue...

The Organisers:

You could say that, or you could think of yourself as a night: "Tonight at Miss Micks..." for example.

Miss Micks:

So I'm a space hosting regular events in the evenings.

The Organisers:

Correct.

Miss Micks:

And is participation by invitation only?

The Organisers:

Not at all. Invitation is a way for us to approach people initially, but in time we dream of establishing a network of people who require, or who are interested in utilising, a space and an audience to communicate their ideas in a live format. We aim for people to know about you, attend you and take advantage of you - be a reciprocal part of you.

Miss Micks:

With pleasure.

The Organisers:

Of course.

Miss Micks:

But what am I interested in? Would you say I am primarily a performance space?

The Organisers:

You are interested in nothing, you are a space. We are interested in your potential as an opportunity for artists and performers. We are also interested in meeting and working with people and in staging ideas. For now we shall refer to you loosely as an events space, so as to not place restrictions on potential participants. We do however anticipate and encourage performance based work to happen here regularly...

Miss Micks:

When you say here?

The Organisers:

We mean here - within you... So you could say you have an emphasis on performance, but it's not all that you can offer.

Miss Micks:

Can you be more specific when you say ‘potential participants’?

The Organisers:

We have no particular agenda, but we encourage creative collaborations and the production of new work. Perhaps it would be helpful if we run through some initial thoughts.

Miss Micks:

It doesn't seem I have a choice...

The Organisers:

This is true. In regards to performance, we are open to however performance based artists define it. We are keen on theatre and because you, Miss Micks, are not a conventional theatre space, we are into your hosting non-conventional theatre. The same goes for dance, we’d like to show dance and work with dancers. Who else?... Writers, thinkers, illusionists, drag acts, musicians, mimes, singers, puppeteers, lecturers, film and video makers, dancers and performers - we can envisage being useful to all these people… or formats... for example.

Miss Micks:

And visual artists?

The Organisers:

We'd prefer to avoid using you as a gallery space, so we'd hope artists who don't usually create event based work - visual and plastic artists and so on - would be involved through collaboration with other artists, or through experiments with their own work. We hope to establish, as a regular event, illustrated talks by these artists. By which we mean, presentations of words and images by thinking and seeing individuals. We also encourage people to curate evenings here. Whether that consists of organising talks, live acts, screenings etcetera, we're prepared to give you over to other people's ideas.

Miss Micks:

M-o-n-e-y...?

The Organisers:

Those who are interested should be aware that imagination and invention are our tools in the absence of budget. You are a not-for-profit space.

Miss Micks:

And the audience?

The Organisers:

Is anyone who's interested and of course an essential component to what we hope to achieve with you. People should check the web-site or join the mailing list to find out what's going on. We plan for events to be held regularly on Tuesday evenings, although these will no doubt be continually disparate in scale and nature.

Miss Micks:

Sounds like you have it all thought out.

The Organisers:

We have no real idea what will happen, this is all speculation. What we really do have is a space and the desire to do something. We hope others feel the same, whether they participate as audience or as artist. We encourage interested individuals or groups to get in touch with us, so we can initiate a dialogue, as this is how we imagine ideas will evolve into participation.

Miss Micks:

Through an initial dialogue?

The Organisers:

With ourselves.

Miss Micks:

I am beginning to have a sense of myself.

The Organisers:

Then we must bring this conversation to a close. It's true all these words urge towards a definition - which we resist on your behalf - it would be weird for you to have a feel for yourself before we or anyone else does.

Miss Micks:

Hmm. Are there any more questions?

The Organisers:

Any enquiries can be addressed to us directly.

Miss Micks:

So what happens to me now?

The Organisers:

Well, we hope to hear a lot more from you soon.

Miss Micks:

...
